Gallery Wall (Pt. 1)…
One of my projects/goals over Christmas was to put up several gallery walls around the house with family photographs. The first one that I completed is on a large blank wall at the end our dining room. We’ve had several things on this wall over the years, but nothing that seemed to appropriately fill the space.
I really wanted this gallery to be made up of different but complementary frame styles of various sizes. All of the frames I ended up using are cheap ones we already owned that were purchased at Michael’s over the years. The pictures that were ultimately included were all taken in 2022.
This gallery wall has thirteen total frames with cream mats that are mostly cut to standard sizes (5x7 and 8x10). For the three largest pictures, I printed those as 12x18 so that none of the original image would be cropped in the frame. I then custom cut mats to fit the 16x20 frames. These are the large frames from lower-left to upper-right.
The images below show the progression of how it was put together. I started by selecting the frames and then arranging them in different ways on the floor until I found a configuration that we all liked. I took a picture of these frames and then on my computer I overlaid different family shots until we settled on the right ones for the gallery. I ordered the prints which are all deep matte giclee mounted on matboard. The deep matte finish helps prevent excess glare and the matboard keeps the prints from bowing in the frames. After receiving the prints, I placed them in the frames and then arranged them on the floor again. The final step was all about math as I began to methodically hang them on the wall starting with the large frame in the middle. We are all thrilled with the results and finally have something that works well for the space.
